The sculptor

George Petrides.

Born in Athens in 1964 and based in Athens and New York, George Petrides is a contemporary sculptor known for public works and traveling exhibitions. His practice explores the intersection of personal narrative, cultural heritage and digital fabrication.

Drawing on his Greek-American heritage, Petrides combines traditional sculptural methods with twenty-first-century technologies. His process begins in clay and moves through 3D scanning, digital sculpting and custom fabrication in recycled and upcycled materials; the work is then reworked and finished by hand. Other works are cast in bronze.

Petrides’ practice is informed by studies in Classics at Harvard College (B.A., 1985) and graduate study at Stanford University (M.B.A. and M.A., 1993). He studied and practiced art part-time from 1996 while pursuing a career in international finance, including senior roles at Lazard Frères and Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette. He first enrolled at the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture in 2001 and continued his studies there over two decades, receiving a Certificate in Sculpture in 2022. In 2017 he committed to a full-time art practice.

Traveling exhibitions

Hellenic Heads: Legacy and Renewal, a ten-city tour, 2022–2027.

Seven cities across Europe and the U.S. and more than 100,000 visitors to date; Berlin opens in September 2026 as the eighth city, followed by New York in February 2027 and a homecoming to Athens later that year.

Creative process

Clay, scan, fabricate, hand-finish.

The Associated Press, in its coverage of the 2024 Venice Biennale, described how Petrides reinterpreted an earlier series in recycled plastic using digital sculpting and 3D printing, hand-finished for exterior display.

Crockett during the final assault on the Alamo, March 6, 1836 — amid the rubble of the mission walls, astride a destroyed 18-pounder cannon, holding a torch and a Bowie knife. Accepted by the White House as a Presidential Gift in 2025.

Modeled from photographs of the artist’s mother, c. 1950; cast near ancient Thebes in a patina echoing Tiffany’s signature color.

Commissioned for the centennial of the destruction of Smyrna, September 1922, and based on the artist’s imagination of his maternal grandmother leaving her homeland that day. Placed in Saint George Square, where many refugees settled in the 1920s.
